History of immigration on the US

The United States of America is the country that holds the largest number of immigrants, this has been for decades and the number has gone even larger. On 1990 it had 23,3 million and on 2015 it had  46,6 million. APA (10)

U.S in  

1790 - 1820


  • 6 years after wining the independence war, America became a desired country by the europeans, because of the liberty of religion and civil life it provided
  • In 1808 the congress prohibited the slave trade
  • In 1790 the congress stablished the first rules for the Naturalization Act (becoming a U.S citizen) which stated that every white person could become a U.S citizen  
  • In 1812 the war between the United Stated and Britain, slowed the process of immigration, and on 1814 when It ended, immigration continued and with more strength and constancy 
  • New York, Boston, Charleston and Philadelphia where the most dwell cities by immigrants
  • Many immigrants died or got pretty sick during the journey, so many people arrived to the U.S with the need of medical service

1820-1880

  • The slavery was coming to its end 
  • Between the 1830´ and 1840´ Ireland was going through the devastating period The Great Hunger. It left 1.5 million deaths but about the same number of immigrants on the States
  • On the 1850´ Chinese immigration to San Francisco began 
  • For the most part U.S immigrants where well welcomed, without counting the bad times when they where accused of stealing jobs 
  • On the 1850´ there was an anti-immigrants political party who made protest against these people

180-1930

  • All immigrants came through the Ellis Island that was newly opened
  • Men of families came first to fide jobs and then their family arrived
  • Some men only came to save wages and then return to England
  • In 1882 Chinese immigration has restricted, which separated Asian people who where already in the country from their families who where not there 
  • America provided refuge for Mexicans who where harmed by the Revolution, the Jews and Armenians who where escaping from the masacres in Turkey
  • When the World war II began, the America perception of immigration shift completely. Americans where suspicious of immigrants and created a series of laws that controlled and limited the flow of immigration

U.S in 

1930-1965 

  • The Great Depression had begun, and because of obvious reasons, people lack from desire to come to the United States, and even immigrants that already live there, returned to their native lands 
  • On the 30´ in full war, nazi persecution refugees arrived to America with the means of refugee 
  • When the U.S declared the war to the Axis powers German and Italian residents on the Stated were detained  
  • 1948 the congress publicly offered displaced people the entre to the United States 
  • During the Cold War, America admitted 38k refugees, and during this period more women than men entered to the country which hadn't happened before  the Great Depression 
  • In 1965 America reformed their immigration rules offering hope to all the immigrants from all around the world

1965-2000

  • The new act of Immigrants and Naturalization changed Americas' face, there where more immigrants than before and the immigration from the Southeast of Asia was magnified 
  • Cuban refugees could finally immigrate to America 
  • The American government gave and still gives preferences to Doctors, nurses, scientists, and hi-tech specialists and many of these groups of people, where Women 
  • Immigrants where not only seen in New York as is the past but also in California, most from the Imperial Valley to Silicon Valley
  • The country became easier to enter, people could do it by sea, airplanes or land routes from Mexico and Canada 
  • The history of immigration is a long road of ups and downs that nowadays continues
